New Library Acquisitions -- Weeks of July 23rd & August 3rd

Featured Book:

Ross Coen, Breaking Ice for Arctic Oil: The Epic Voyage of the SS Manhattan Through the Northwest Passage (2012).
Breaking Ice is a concise monograph that discusses the historic voyage in 1969 of the SS Manhattan, the first oil tanker commissioned to test the feasibility of "an all-marine transportation system for Alaska North Slope crude oil."  Although primarily a work of history, the text also provides key insight into the current state of the oil industry and the geopolitical framework in the arctic.  Other issues discussed that may be of interest to environmental reaserchers include the Law of the Sea and the rights of arctic coastal states on issues of pollution.
